[Post 4] Interaction

The video I choose is named “What is Impulse Buying?” created by Word Glossary in 2019 and published on YouTube (Hyperlink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j45QD99icYE). This video briefly described the definition of impulsive buying and how businesses encourage the behavior.

The video uses simple language to demonstrate ideas, and subtitles of each sentence are provided. This video can be included as a part of the inclusive design because learners with English as the second language or loss of hearing can understand the video as other learners. Moreover, this video provided impulsive buying’s definition in the text, and more examples are given in the text version of the content. That is, all learners are able to get more benefits and convenience from this video.

In the learner-material interactive perspective, a self-administered online test can be designed where learners are able to get immediate feedback on their understanding of the video. Self-assessment assists learners to know how much they learned, and this activity intends to let them reflect their reading and listening abilities and their self-learning abilities.

Learning online is a lonely process, and it is clear instructor should generate as much interactive as possible for learners. That is, there are more activities can be generated from watching a video. Learners can be asked to write what they learned and how can they relate it to their life from the video. Learners’ writing can be posted in the blog to generate further learners to learners interactive. Students can be asked to review their peers’ work and leave a comment, and each student could even be given privileges to mark their peers’ work. In addition, for the purpose of developing higher order learning outcomes, student-teacher interaction is necessary. Instructors should use summative assessment to give each learner feedback on their writings to guide them to achieve higher learning outcomes. Feedbacks can be given to each student via email which gives students more privacy and a more comfortable learning atmosphere.

Work that must be done for an instructor is manageable and worthwhile. Most of works for an instructor is concentrates on viewing and commenting on each student’s work. Other course designs include finding for the video and designing self-assessment questions might also be time-consuming; once it is done, it can be used for as many learners as desired. That is, when the number of student increase, the instructor will need to give more student summative assessment, and it will be manageable and worthwhile. The activities can be scaled for larger numbers of students.

Xiaoying chooses a very interesting video, and many people face a same problem which is they can’t fall asleep. Personlly, I am interested in this video, and it would help me alot. Also, this video uses many comic pictures and professional explanation, and students would feel the video is not boring and they also can learn from that. I agree with Xiaoying’s point at the end of her blog. If there are some multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions in the video, it could help students take part in the topic deeply.
